Why this title?
(Literally: “Are the Ice Caps Cooked?”)
The French title is a play on words. In French, the expression être cuit (“to be cooked”) also means to be finished, to be done for, or to be beyond saving. The title therefore asks a double question: Are the polar ice caps melting? And more broadly, are we reaching a point of no return?
The project does not seek to provide simple answers. Instead, it explores the many environmental, social, political and scientific dimensions of climate change through long-form radio documentaries, interviews and field reporting.
It also echoes the famous French wartime coded message “Les carottes sont cuites” (“The carrots are cooked”), used during the Second World War to signal that a decisive moment had been reached. Here, the reference is symbolic: it evokes urgency and the need to confront a historic challenge, while asking whether it is still possible to act.
What is lCSC?
Les Calottes sont cuites… ? is an independent radio project created in 2021 on Radio Zinzine, a French community radio station.
Through interviews, documentaries and field recordings, the project explores the environmental, social, political and scientific dimensions of climate change.
It also aims to highlight local initiatives, foster dialogue across Europe and contribute to a better understanding of climate transformations.
The project is currently expanding through collaborations with independent radios and researchers across Europe.
